Cat Feeder Trap Combination

About 3 years ago, we noticed many cats coming through our back yard. These were community cats also known as feral cats looking for food and shelter. We also talked to neighbors who were having problems with animals getting into trash cans. Another glowing issue was that these cats did not have rabies shots.

With the intentions of helping our neighborhood, my wife and I first put out food for the cats in the thought that this would reduce their wanting to get into the neighborhood trash. Since that time, we have trapped many cats and had them neutered as well as vaccinated against rabies and upper respiratory problems. The cat's left ear also has a small amount removed from the tip. This lets a person know that these cats have been neutered and have had vaccinations.
Trying to catch community cats for neutering which are savvy to metal traps, is a most difficult job. To help overcome this problem, I built a cat feeder and trap combination built from materials easily found at your favorite home and garden store. Although you really don't own community cats*, these have become part of our family, have been spayed or neutered, and are given food and shelter. Perhaps this structure might help with your cats. The following pages provide you
with photos and ideas for building your own feeder and trap. It's
designed to be an on-going functional feeder while protecting your cats
from large animals and to trap those felines who have learned to stay away
from a wire trap.
Please note that this trap will also allow smaller animals to enter such as raccoons. They can also be trapped if you need. This is not designed to be an automatic trap. It requires your participation and patience. Also note that there are no success or safety issue guarantees expressed here. Always use safe work practices and safety clothes including but not limited to gloves and safety glasses in any construction. If you have never worked in wood or any of these materials, I suggest that you find a friend who has this experience to help you. To begin, go to Page 1 |

*Update on this remark: I have recently found that some jurisdictions now say if you feed a cat you own it.
